Access control and video intercoms

ACCESS CONTROL

Access control consists of verifying whether an entity (a person or a vehicle) requesting access to a resource has the necessary rights to do so.1 An access control offers the possibility of accessing physical resources (for example, a building, a premises or a house)

Importance of having access control

With all the information on the table, it is easy to conclude that installing access control is really important. These systems facilitate the work of security and human resources departments in offices, public bodies, construction sites, industries, parking lots or gyms. The reason? With a single software you can manage the entry and exit of vehicles, identify the people who access the building, deny admission if there is no authorization to do so or restrict access at certain times.

At DC&N we are specialists in access control solutions and integrations. Contact us and we will study your case to offer you the best option.

Functions of an access control
Access control systems make it possible to verify the identity of whoever intends to enter a venue and, depending on the permissions available to the user, they accept or deny the access request. In addition, they guarantee the safety of the people who are inside a building, since they allow them to be located in real time and traceability of both workers and visitors.

How does access control work?
Regardless of the form of identification used (card, code, fingerprint, license plate reading…), these devices force the person to identify themselves so that the system can make the appropriate checks to open access or leave it closed.

Access control types
Currently there are different types of access control that allow each company to find the one that best suits their needs:

Proximity systems: they usually work with cards that are brought closer to the reader so that the device accesses the user’s information.
Biometric systems: that recognize a physical characteristic of the person who requests to enter the premises. Fingerprint readers are normally used, although facial or eye features can also be identified.
License plate recognition systems: very useful to facilitate control in car parks. As a vehicle approaches the entrance, a reader identifies the license plate and opens or holds closed the access barrier.
How to choose an access control system
Before deciding which access control to install, it is essential to analyze the characteristics of the device, the company and the building:

Number of people entering and leaving daily.
System location.
Type of security required and if there are restricted access areas.
Ease of use, maintenance needs and availability of regular updates to the control system.
Compatibility with the rest of the tools used in the company.
Once these aspects have been analyzed, it will be easier to choose the most appropriate method to facilitate traceability, data management and daily use.

Video Intercoms

It is an autonomous system that is used to manage the calls that are made at the door of a building (whether it be a residential complex, a single-family home, work centers, etc.), controlling access to it through audiovisual communication between the interior and the exterior. The main feature of the video door entry system is that it allows the person occupying the interior to identify the visitor, being able, if they wish (and only if they wish), to start a conversation and/or open the door to allow access to the person who has called.

It is usual to integrate video door entry systems with different access control systems. This means that, on the same street panel, elements are installed that allow certain previously authorized users to access the interior of a venue. The most common means are proximity cards, a fingerprint reader, a secret number keyboard or even bluetooth or WiFi activated by a mobile phone.

Many of the terminals found on the market are prepared to admit extensions, converting the video door entry monitor into a small central unit to control automation. From it you can view one or more additional cameras installed in other accesses, activate lights, open a second door, etc.

There is also the possibility of seeing the same image and sound that appears on the video intercom on television.

There are multiple variants on this basic format. In addition to street panels with one pushbutton per dwelling, it is possible to find others that have a numeric keypad: in this case, adapted for large residential groups, the dwellings are identified by codes. Others incorporate static information plates or even small screens to guide users or to facilitate use for people with disabilities. In the video door entry monitor it is possible to find models with an earpiece similar to that of a telephone along with others called “hands-free”. There are also monitors with memories, which store an image every time someone knocks on the door, and video intercoms with a touch screen.

When a visitor activates one of the buttons on the street panel, its camera is connected and the image captured outside appears on the monitor.

This connection occurs automatically, without the need to activate the equipment, becoming one of the essential aspects of the video door entry system. From this moment on, the person inside the building can open the door if they wish or they can start a conversation, which is usually secret (it cannot be heard by other users of the same building). The equipment also disconnects automatically after a certain time. For this operation, the video door entry unit as a whole uses the low voltage energy supplied by the building’s trunk, regardless of the installation of the homes, so the equipment can be used even if the supply has been interrupted in a home.
